Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters recently earned her degree in Business Management at North West University after making history at her high school for holding two leadership positions. Demi-Leigh’s biggest motivation comes from her half-sister who has a disability, that lives in Potchefstroom with her stepmother and father. In her spare time, Demi-Leigh is passionate about a program she helped develop to train women in self-defense in various situations. She plans to share these workshops and help as many women as she can.

FAQ's about Miss Universe Pageant

HOW DO I GET TO THE NATIONAL MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT?
To compete at Miss Universe, contestants must win their respective national pageants. 
WHAT CAN I DO TO BEST PREPARE FOR THE PAGEANT?
Contestants should discuss preparing for the pageants with their country or state directors. They have a wealth of information, contacts and referrals.
ARE THERE AGE REQUIREMENTS?
Yes. Miss Universe contestants must be at least 18 and under 28 years of age before January 1st in the year they hope to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. 
CAN I BE MARRIED?
No, contestants may not be married or pregnant. They must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled nor given birth to, or parented a child. The titleholders are also required to remain unmarried throughout their reign.
CAN I COMPETE MORE THAN ONCE?
Contestants may compete more than once in the state pageants (In the Miss Cayman Islands Pageant), but only once per year. However, contestants may only compete in the national pageants (Miss Universe Pageant) once. 
AM I REQUIRED TO HAVE A PAGEANT COACH?
No. While some feel more prepared when they work with an experienced pageant coach who can give them tips, many women have won titles without any outside training. Candidates also turn to their state and national directors for assistance, as the directors are experienced in providing effective guidance about the pageant. The Miss Cayman Islands Pageant Committee offers some training to contestants and to the winner of the Crown.
WHAT IS THE JUDGING CRITERIA FOR MISS UNIVERSE?
Contestants will be judged in three separate categories; evening gown swimsuit, and a personality interview. There is no talent competition.
HOW ARE THE PAGEANT SITES CHOSEN?
The Miss Universe Organization works throughout the year with private enterprises, state and city government officials and, in the case of the Miss Universe pageant, with foreign governments to establish the Host Site for each production. The city or country offering the optimal venue and support for the pageant is chosen.

HOW MANY CONTESTANTS COMPETE IN MISS UNIVERSE?
In the case of Miss Universe, between 80 and 100 countries send a candidate to compete. 
WHAT DOES MISS UNIVERSE DO AFTER THEY ARE CROWNED?
After the winner is crowned, they are whisked away to New York City and are prepped for a media tour where they make multiple appearances at media outlets, networks, charitable organizations, sponsor events, etc. The titleholders spend their reign representing their platforms, raising awareness and funds for charitable alliances, and traveling.
IS THE MISS UNIVERSE AND MISS WORLD PAGEANTS DIFFERENT?
Yes. The Miss World and Miss Universe are two different pageants that take place each year. ​
